Questions We Get a Lot

Most ceiling storage racks are designed to mount directly into ceiling joists, which are the structural beams above your drywall. Before installing, we recommend locating your joists with a stud finder and verifying their spacing matches the mounting hardware included with your unit. If you have any doubts about your ceiling's structure, a licensed contractor can assess the load capacity quickly.

A fixed overhead rack bolts into your ceiling joists and stays in place — you access items using a ladder or step stool. A motorized lift system, like our 52" overhead lift, uses a powered mechanism to lower your stored items down to ground level with the press of a button, making it ideal for bins, seasonal gear, or equipment you access more regularly. Both options are heavy-duty; the right choice depends on how often you need to reach what's stored.

Many of our overhead racks offer adjustable drop-down height, so they can be configured to suit different ceiling heights and slopes. We recommend measuring your clearance from the floor to the lowest joist and checking the product specs for minimum ceiling height requirements before purchasing. If you're working with an unusually low or angled ceiling, our motorized drop-down systems tend to offer the most flexibility.

We offer Free Shipping on Most Orders Within the Continental U.S. (Excludes AK/HI), and ceiling storage units are covered under our 30-Day Returns policy. If something isn't right with your order, please refer to our Return Policy page for full details on how to initiate a return.

About Our Ceiling Storage Units

Garage Harbor's ceiling storage units are built for garage owners who want to make the most of every square foot. Our overhead racks and motorized lift systems are constructed from heavy-duty steel and designed to handle serious weight — from seasonal bins and sporting equipment to tools and bulky gear. The 96-inch adjustable steel overhead rack gives you a wide, fixed platform that mounts cleanly into your ceiling joists, while the motorized 52" overhead lift system brings stored items down to you at the push of a button, rated for up to 250 lbs. Whether you're outfitting a single-car garage or a full workshop, these ceiling-mounted systems help you reclaim your floor space without losing access to the things you actually use. Every unit is designed to install securely, hold firmly, and look sharp doing it — exactly what you'd expect from a garage built to perform.
